What is different about Subaru batteries
Boxer layout, easy battery access
The flat boxer engine sits low, which leaves the battery in open view at the front corner of the engine bay. Access is straightforward, so most Subaru replacements are quick once the correct case and terminal layout are confirmed.
Auto Start-Stop batteries
Subarus with Auto Start-Stop are built with a stop-start grade battery, typically the Q-85 size in a D23L case. A plain 55D23L has the same footprint but does not tolerate repeated restarts. We fit the same grade the car came with.
Window reset after disconnection
After the battery has been disconnected, the one-touch function of Subaru power windows usually needs to be re-initialised by holding the switch. The idle can also feel uneven for a short drive while the engine computer relearns. Both are normal.
Modified WRX and parasitic drain
Aftermarket alarms, boost gauges, dash cams and amplifiers are common on WRX and STI models. Each adds a small constant draw. If a healthy battery goes flat after a few days parked, the drain needs tracing, and a new battery alone will not cure it.

Subaru battery questions
Does my Subaru Forester need an EFB battery?
If it has Auto Start-Stop, yes. Foresters from the 2019 generation onward generally have the system and are built with a stop-start grade battery. Earlier models without it use a conventional 55D23L. Look for an Auto Start-Stop off control in the car, or send us the year.
My windows stopped working one-touch after the battery change. Is something broken?
No. Subaru windows lose their auto setting when power is cut. Lower the window, then raise it fully and keep holding the switch for a moment so the system learns its limits again. Repeat for each door. Our technician can do this before leaving.
Why does my WRX battery keep going flat?
On a modified WRX the usual cause is a constant draw from added electronics such as an alarm, dash cam or amplifier. Short drives with long gaps between them make it worse. We test the battery and charging first; if both pass, the wiring of the add-ons needs to be checked.
