Toyota in the UAE: what wears the battery

Toyotas do every kind of work in the UAE. Land Cruisers and Prados carry families all week and head to the desert at weekends, often with a fridge and extra lights. Camrys run long taxi and fleet shifts with the AC on. Hilux and Hiace make short delivery hops. Add the heat, and battery life drops to around two years.

Toyota hybrids such as the Camry, Corolla and RAV4 Hybrid still use a 12V auxiliary battery to wake the computers and close the high-voltage relays. If it goes flat, the car will not go to Ready, even with a fully charged hybrid pack.

What is different about Toyota batteries

  • JIS sizes, with newer exceptions

    Gulf-spec Toyotas mostly use JIS cases such as NS40, 55D23L and 80D26L. Several models on newer platforms have moved to DIN-style LN cases with recessed terminals. The two types do not interchange, so we check the model year and the battery tray before sending a battery.

  • Two batteries on diesel Land Cruisers

    V8 diesel Land Cruisers are commonly built with two 12V batteries working together. When one fails it drags the other down, so both should be tested and normally replaced as a matched pair. Petrol models sold in the Gulf usually have a single battery.

  • Hybrid 12V battery in the boot

    On many Toyota hybrids the 12V battery sits in the boot or under the cargo floor instead of under the bonnet. Because it is inside the cabin space, it is a sealed AGM type with a vent tube, and a standard flooded battery should not be fitted in its place.

  • Desert accessories drain batteries

    Desert-prepared Land Cruisers and Prados often carry a fridge, an air compressor, extra lights or a second audio system. These loads empty a standard battery quickly when the engine is off. Tell us what is fitted and we will suggest a higher-capacity battery in the same case.

Which battery does a Toyota Land Cruiser take?

Most petrol Land Cruisers in the UAE take an 80D26L or the longer 95D31L, depending on year and engine. The 70 Series has its terminals reversed, and diesel models carry two batteries. Send us the model year on WhatsApp and we confirm the exact size before the technician leaves.

My Camry Hybrid will not go to Ready. Is it the hybrid battery?

Usually not. A hybrid that stays dark or will not go to Ready most often has a flat 12V auxiliary battery, which sits in the boot on the Camry Hybrid. We test it at the car, jump-start it if it is only discharged, and replace it with the correct AGM type if it has failed.

How long does a Toyota battery last in Dubai?

Expect around two years in Gulf heat, compared with three to five years in cooler countries. Taxis, delivery vehicles and cars that only make short trips often get less. A test before each summer shows whether the battery will hold, and we recommend replacement only when the test says so.

Can you replace a Toyota battery in a basement car park?
