Who makes Bosch batteries
Robert Bosch opened his workshop in Stuttgart in 1886, and the company grew into one of the large suppliers of parts to car makers. Its name is on ignition, fuel injection, braking and sensor systems in cars of almost every make. Batteries are one line in a wide aftermarket catalogue sold through parts stores and workshops.
The Bosch range is split into numbered tiers, S3 to S6, and the higher the number, the more starting power on offer. What sits inside a tier can change by region. In some countries S4 includes EFB versions and S5 includes AGM, while in others AGM is sold only as S6. The number alone does not tell you the technology.
Bosch does not publish which factory makes its batteries, and supply differs between regions. That is normal for a parts brand, but it means the label is your guide. We read the technology, capacity, cold cranking amps and production code on the battery itself and match them to your car, instead of relying on the tier number alone.

Bosch does not publish the factory behind its batteries, so the country of manufacture can differ from one batch or size to another.
A tier number does not fix the technology. The same S4 or S5 name can mean flooded in one market and EFB or AGM in another, so we go by the label.

Battery types: flooded, EFB, AGM and 12V lithium
The type your car left the factory with decides what can replace it. Fitting a cheaper type than the car was built for is the most common reason a new battery fails early.

Can I fit a Bosch S5 in place of an S4?
Yes, if the case size, terminal layout and hold-down match. A higher tier gives more reserve for a car with many accessories or one that does short trips. It is not a substitute for AGM: a car built with AGM needs the AGM tier, not a flooded S5.
