What Gulf conditions change

  • Gearbox oil thins as it gets hot, and in a Gulf summer it spends most of its life hot. Thin, aged oil protects bearings and synchros less well, and heat hardens rubber seals until they weep. Add stop-start traffic on Al Khail Road or regular towing, and a small leak can become a low-oil failure.

How it works, step by step

  1. Describe what you feel

Call or WhatsApp your location and car details. Say when the problem appears: cold or hot, which gear, under load or on lift-off. These details point toward the faulty part.

  2. Safe collection

A car that still shifts normally can be driven to the workshop by a driver. One that grinds, jumps out of gear or leaks heavily is carried on a flatbed.

  3. Inspection and quote

The workshop road tests the car, checks oil level and condition, inspects mounts and seals on a lift, and scans for codes. You receive findings and a quote before any strip-down.

  4. Repair and road test

Approved repairs are carried out, the gearbox is refilled with the specified oil and the car is driven through every gear. It is then delivered back to you.

What gearbox repair covers

  • Road test and fault code scan

  • Gearbox oil level and condition check

  • Seal, gasket and driveshaft seal replacement

  • Gearbox and engine mount replacement

  • Bearing, synchro and selector repair

  • Removal and rebuild where the fault requires it

Signs you need gearbox repair

  • Gears grind or refuse to engage, especially when selecting second or reverse.

  • A whining noise rises with road speed in some gears but not in others.

  • Red or brown oil drips under the middle of the car where it was parked.

  • A heavy clunk is felt through the floor when shifting between drive and reverse.

Gearbox Repair: questions

All questions and answers
Can I drive with a gearbox oil leak?

Only a short distance, and only if the leak is slow. A gearbox holds a limited amount of oil and most cars have no warning light for its level. Once it runs low, bearings and gears wear quickly. If you see fresh drips every morning, have it inspected soon, and use a flatbed if the puddle is large.

Is a clunk when I select drive always the gearbox?

No. A clunk on engaging drive or reverse often comes from a collapsed engine or gearbox mount, or from wear in a driveshaft joint, and the gearbox itself is fine. Mounts are far simpler to replace than internal parts. This is why the car is inspected on a lift before anyone suggests opening the unit.

Repair, rebuild or replacement unit: how is that decided?

By what the inspection finds. An external fault such as a seal, mount or linkage is repaired in place. Internal wear limited to bearings or synchros suits a rebuild. If the casing or gear sets are badly damaged, a replacement unit may make more sense. The workshop explains the options and you choose.

What does gearbox repair cost?

It depends on whether the unit has to come out of the car, which parts are worn and whether they are available locally for your model. An external leak or a mount is a much smaller job than an internal rebuild. A quote is given after inspection and before work starts.
